Radiocarbon to the Rescue!

Just received our first 14C date from Layer III charcoal in Core 8. This is likely an anthropogenic sand layer and is capped by clays and later tsunami deposits. The date is 652-549 cal BP (2sd). While not Lapita in age, this is interesting as we have a better idea of the timing of beach formation here and better evidence of prehistoric occupation.

Core 8 was placed inland of this swampy area, back in the tree line.
