In 2009 the survey focused on gaining a better understanding of the distribution and density of archaeological remains across the entire survey area. This gave us a survey area approximately 20 km2 from Karanis to Qasr el Sagha and from the lake edge northwards into the desert. Given the enormity of the area, we had to devise a way of sampling the landscape that was systematic and quantifiable. We employed a number of sampling strategies that enabled us to gauge variability in distribution radiating out from and along the lake edge.
